WVA Letter to Vets
How to Get Into the Media
Sample Media Statement

Please submit details of your planned event here

World Veterinary Day was founded in 2001. It was developed as a result of the hard work of WVA President Dr. Jim Edwards and the creative thinking of his wife Pam.

The objective of the World Veterinary Day is not to glorify the WVA or its officers, but to highlight the great work of the veterinary profession around the World.

Veterinary medicine is a highly respected and compassionate profession. However, its contributions are largely unappreciated because our colleagues have been too busy serving the public to publicize their contributions to animal and human health, animal welfare, food safety and food security.

The World Veterinary Day is celebrated on the last Saturday in April when all veterinarians publicly display their broad knowledge, skills, and the many contributions their profession makes to society and the world at large. It is a day that private practitioners, corporate and public practitioners, educators and students can show the many contributions of their great profession.

The theme for this year's World Veterinary Day is "Celebrate our Diversity". It can be celebrated in the way or ways that each veterinarian, veterinary clinic, veterinary organization or agency believes best demonstrates the contributions of the veterinary profession. Simultaneously, the media, legislators, public officials, and the general public must be bombarded with messages that veterinarians are key players in food safety, zoonotic diseases as well as animal health and welfare.

World Veterinary Day should be similar a day to publicly display the Hope Diamond – we need to display the majestic array of our veterinary talents.

Have a good World Veterinary Day!

Leon Russell, D.V.M.
WVA President

The 6th World Veterinary Day in Zambia
Posted Friday, 31 March 2006

The Veterinary Association of Zambia plans to spend World Vet Day dessimating information to the public in general about Bird Flu. Talks on the subject are being organised. The reason for this is as an Association we feel the public does not have all the details they need about Bird Flu and many have burning questions within them. This is a chance to know what the public really feel about the situation and a chance to know how best we can help. We plan to have stakeholders set up stalls to display the various veterinary services and equipement they offer. In addition we plan to have a little fun by having a lucky dip!!!We plan to organise this for a whole day, hence lunch shall hopefully also be arranged.

This event will be held at The Samora Machel Veterinary School, Lusaka, Zambia. No fee for participation is being asked. We will be asking for contributions from the various stakeholders.

World Veterinary Day in Canada
Posted Thursday, April 06, 2006

2006 will mark the first time that the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) formally recognizes World Veterinary Day. Our objective is to coordinate the celebration with our annual celebration of Animal Health Week, which occurs in October. This is an event we have hosted for over twenty years. The theme adopted this year will be “VETERINARY PROFESSIONALS, LOCAL CARE-GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY”.

A graphic design depicting this theme is being developed and will be displayed on posters distributed to CVMA members across Canada. Additional promotional material will be produced and can be used during Animal Health Week or World Veterinary Day 2007. The occasion of World Veterinary Day 2006 will be used to introduce this theme and encourage participation in the fall event. This will be accompanied by a series of news releases and appropriate articles published on our public web site www.animalhealthcare.ca.

The recurrent message in all this material will be the veterinarian’s role in animal health as it relates to public health. There will be an emphasis on the reality that there is a global reality to everything we do as veterinarians and that no one can practice or exist in isolation.

There is an excellent relationship of this message to the theme of the World Veterinary Congress 2008 in Vancouver, Canada, CELEBRATE OUR DIVERSITY. The opportunity to cross message World Veterinary Day and the World Veterinary Association’s congress will be used where ever possible. The CVMA looks forward to participating in the WVA’s annual celebration with the same excitement we look forward to hosting the world’s veterinary profession in 2008.

North American Councilor for WVA (Canada)
Chair, World Veterinary Congress 2008

World Veterinary Day in Jamaica
Posted: Monday, April 24, 2006

The Jamaica Veterinary Medical Association (JVMA) celebrates the 60th Anniversary of its founding in 2006. World Veterinary Day 2006 will be the starting point of celebratory activities. We have been working with the print and electronic media to raise the public profile of the profession and its diverse roles in society, through radio and television interviews and a major newspaper supplement publication.

The newspaper supplement, to be published in the Jamaica Sunday 'Gleaner' of May 7th, 2006, will contain articles and commentaries written by local veterinarians on a variety of topics.

On World Veterinary Day itself, April 29, 2006, at the Caymanas Park Race Track, a trophy will be presented to the winner of a selected horse race in honour of the JVMA's 60th Anniversay. The trophy will be presented by JVMA President, Dr. Grahan Brown. Radio and television coverage is expected.

JVMA members have been urged to mark the Day in their practices in whatever way they can.

Other 60th Anniversary activities include an awards banquet planned for later in the year and special continuing education programs for our general meetings throughout the year. This will culminate in a JVMA delegation to the 24th Biennial Caribbean Veterinary Conference to be held November 8 - 10 2006 in Grenada, hosted by the Grenada Veterinary Medical Association and the St. Georges University School of Veterinary Medicine.

The JVMA is currently in discussions with the aim of producing a short television documentary on our profession in Jamaica. ,

Volunteer Veterinary Work in Kosovo
Posted: Monday, April 24, 2006

By Petra Lowen and Toni-Maree McInnes
UK based Kiwi veterinarians

Animals can often become the forgotten victims in war and civil unrest. In the midst of much human suffering they can easily be overlooked. This is the case in Kosovo which has been administered as a UN-NATO protectorate (UNMIK: United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo) since June 1999 due to the ethnic conflict between the Albanian and Serbian populations. Consequently, there is a high international presence especially in Prishtina comprising UN, military (KFOR) and police as Kosovo endeavours to attain formal independence from Serbia.

There are hundreds of thousands of street dogs roaming Kosovo. During the war many formed intimidating packs to survive and as a result much of the human population is fearful of dogs. Currently mass shootings are used in a futile effort to control numbers and the highways are littered with the bodies of dogs hit by cars. With all the turmoil in the region, animal welfare is not a high priority.
