Technological advances in reproduction, handling, nutrition and sanitation.
The first technical event in the sector will be held from August 13 to 15, 2008, in Chapeco (SC), a city with the largest number of federally inspected slaughterhouses in Brazil.
The main businesses in the cattle raising sector, suppliers and veterinarians are located in Chapeco – Southern Brazil, or in the Western Region of Santa Catarina, hence the demand for technical and qualified information that resulted in the first technical event on pork industry, geared towards the needs of professionals and businesses. Professionals from Brazil's main exporting businesses will participate in the event and in discussing international demands and sanitation advantages of Brazilian herds. Brazil now has the capacity to be the largest exporter of pork, as with other meats produced with an excellent standard and a guaranteed market.

Source:
You are cordially invited to attend the Brucellosis 2008 International Research Conference (including the 61st Brucellosis Research Conference) to be held at Royal Holloway College, University of London on 10 to 13 September 2008. We are particularly pleased that both the WHO and the CTA have agreed to co-sponsor the meeting along with VLA and Defra.
This will be the latest in a series of successful international meetings previously held in France, Spain and Mexico, and originating from the decision of the Brucellosis Society to broaden the spread of its meetings.
The conference is aimed at scientists, government and international regulators, veterinarians, and clinicians with an interest in brucellosis. We hope that the meeting will encourage the interface between these groups essential in the ongoing struggle against this global zoonosis.
The scientific programme will include a blend of fundamental and applied research as well providing a forum for discussion of tools and procedures relevant to the control of brucellosis. The programme will include reviews by eminent scientists within the brucellosis field covering current understanding, and future prospective developments, in their areas of interest.

25 - 27 September, Royal College of Physicians, London

With climate change having taken a central position on the world’s agenda and the arrival of bluetongue having all too vividly demonstrated how climate change can impact directly on Britain’s animal health, delegates at this year’s BVA Congress will have an opportunity to hear Professor Robert Watson, Defra’s Chief Scientific Adviser, set out the challenges ahead for the profession. Bluetongue is seen by some as a harbinger of worse to come, and with Defra having listed work on new and emerging diseases as one of its priorities for research, Professor Watson’s Wooldridge Memorial Lecture ‘Climate change: the global challenge’ should prove thought-provoking.

Benefits for companion animal therapies and livestock production
Source:

Research in stem cell biology promises to provide long term benefits for animals and livestock production.
In a paper to be delivered at the annual national conference of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), Dr Jonathan Hill says that, with the boom in stem cell biology research for medical uses, will come opportunities for animal health and production applications.
“Stem cell research in animals operates outside human ethical frameworks and provides focus on technology development within the confines of ethical treatment of animals. This will facilitate advances in stem cell biology, applications for therapeutic drug design and safety, clinical trials and commercialisation of products or therapies,” said Dr Hill.

The outbreak of the Equine Influenza (EI) virus highlighted the need for increased investment in biosecurity and demonstrates the vital role veterinarians play in Australia’s biosecurity both now and in the future, Dr James Gilkerson says in a paper to be presented at the annual conference of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA).
Dr James Gilkerson praised the industry, veterinarians (both private and government), owners, riders, racing bodies and the many other equine groups, for working hard to manage the outbreak and eradicate EI from Australia so quickly.
“Australia is one of the few countries in the world that has managed to eradicate EI following an outbreak, with the last reported infection premise reported just four months after the outbreak was declared.

News: Veterinarians, scientists and educators to play a key role in animal health debates
Posted by: JimEdwards on Sunday, May 25, 2008 - 07:01 PM

|
Source:

Veterinarians, scientists and educators should play a key role in animal health debates, says Dr Pauleen Bennett in a paper to be presented at the annual national conference of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA).
Dr Bennett says that debates about animal welfare sometimes take place without logical thinking, relevant empirical data and the considered opinion of experts. Instead, Dr Bennett says, debates are driven by lobby groups and celebrities who are not always given adequate information about the issue.
“All veterinarians, scientists and educators must adopt more proactive attitudes and behaviours towards the promotion of animal welfare in our community. Decisions about animal welfare should not be made by well-meaning people who have empathy for animals but have no real background or understanding of all the issues.

The Australian Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre for Emerging Infectious Disease calls for a ‘one health’ approach in responding to new emerging infectious diseases (EIDs).
Dr Hume Field and Dr Lisa Adams say nearly 75% of new diseases emerge from animals and call for a unified approach to disease management, in papers to be delivered at the annual national conference of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA).
“The majority of zoonoses have spilled from wildlife reservoirs into humans either directly or indirectly. The emergence of many zoonoses can be attributed to predisposing factors such as global travel, trade, agricultural expansion, deforestation/habit fragmentation and urbanisation.

News: International Meeting On Emerging Diseases And Surveillance
Posted by: JimEdwards on Sunday, May 25, 2008 - 07:00 PM
calendar
|
Source:
Emerging infectious diseases are at the center of the world's attention. The threats of pandemic influenza and bioterrorism, and the realization that new infectious diseases may be recognized at any time, in any place, have dramatically raised our awareness. What are the most important emerging disease threats? How can we quickly detect their occurrences in order to respond in a timely and appropriate way?
ProMED-mail, the Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases, is pleased to invite you to the International Meeting on Emerging Diseases and Surveillance 2009. Along with our cosponsors, the European Centers for Disease Control, the World Organization for Animal Health, the European Commission, and the Wildlife Conservation Society, we are developing a conference that will bring together the public health community, scientists, health care workers, and other leaders in the field of emerging infectious diseases. The meeting will embrace the 'One Medicine, One Health' concept recognizing that, just as diseases reach across national boundaries, so do they transcend species barriers. We therefore welcome the full articipation of both the human and animal health communities.

News: Effect of climate change on livestock
Posted by: JimEdwards on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 03:37 PM
calendar
|
Source:

Australian livestock industries are likely to be affected by broader-scale economic and trade issues associated with climate change.
In papers to be delivered at the annual national conference of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), Dr Mark Howden, Dr Bryson Bates and Dr Don McFarlane outline the drivers of climate change, the effects of climate change on natural resources and Australian livestock and the need for deliberate policy measures to prepare for climate change.
Dr Mark Howden says that climate change has both direct and indirect effects on livestock systems.
“Experience in livestock industries in Australia demonstrates significant sensitivity to climate factors in terms of feed production and its variation and hence grazing management, feed quality, exposure to heat and cold stress, pest and disease impacts, land use, degradation of the natural resource base and international trade. Consequently, if the climate changes, there are likely to be systemic changes in livestock systems.

News: Biofuels production – implications for feed grain users
Posted by: JimEdwards on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 03:36 PM
calendar
|
Source:

High Australian oil prices, increased reliance on imported oil, and environmental concerns have led to calls for mandating the blending of domestically produced ethanol with petrol.
In a paper to be delivered today at the annual national conference of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), Dr Matthew George talks about the implications of these measures for feed grain users.
“Fertiliser and other associated agricultural input costs have significantly increased, as unprecedented cropping acres are recruited. International agricultural economists are predicting a 5 - 6% increase in food inflation in 2009. Coupled with wheat shortages, feed grain prices are likely to increase substantially in the future, and global and Australian competition from biofuels industries will gain momentum.
“The production of ethanol from grains in Australia and globally is largely dependent on the prevailing government policy. Co-products derived from grain-based ethanol production do have value as a protein and energy source for cattle.

A one-day seminar entitled ‘One World, One Disease,’ will take place at the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM), Wimpole Street, London, on 24 June 2008.
The event will examine some of the effects of climate change on patterns of animal health and the impact of this on humans.
The meeting will provide an understanding of the complexity of the global changes that we face, and will work towards the integrated approach needed to manage the serious problems that threaten animal and human health.
About two-thirds of new infectious diseases that threaten humans come from animals. With global climate change, this looks set to increase. Now more than ever, it is important that veterinary and medical colleagues come together to discuss disease control strategies.

March 15, 2008
"Voluntourism" is a growing trend combining travel and volunteer work. Since Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans has been a hot spot for such altruistic trips. AVMA members and their families attending the Association's Annual Convention in New Orleans this July will help the city by refurbishing four area animal shelters.
Attendees of the AVMA Annual Convention in New Orleans this July will have the opportunity to roll up their sleeves to help rehabilitate area animal shelters still recovering from Hurricane Katrina.
On July 17-18, just before the first day of the convention on July 19, up to 100 volunteers will refurbish animal shelters in four city parishes identified by the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
"Knowing what kind of tragedy and hardship the people and the animals endured as a result of Katrina, we thought what better way to give back than leverage our convention to help repair some of the damage that was done," explained David Little, director of the AVMA Convention and Meeting Planning Division.
Adding a philanthropic project to the AVMA convention experience had been in the works for a couple years, added Malyssa Sopko, assistant director of the division. Given the ongoing recovery efforts in post-Katrina New Orleans, the site of the 2008 convention was the perfect place to begin the project. "What better place to roll this out?" Sopko said.

News: OIE Conference on Veterinary Medicinal Products in Africa
Posted by: JimEdwards on Monday, February 11, 2008 - 02:43 PM

|
Dakar (Senegal) 25-27 March 2008
"Towards the harmonisation and improvement of registration and quality control".
Source:

Veterinary medicinal products have increasingly become a focus of attention and sometimes of strong warnings due to uncontrolled or illicit use, especially in some developing countries. There has been a significant increase in the demand for these products, particularly in the African continent where many of the OIE listed animal diseases are still prevalent. As a result, the liberalisation of the sector in Africa has led to veterinary medicinal products being increasingly traded and has also contributed to a diversification of internal and external sources of supply, with the risk of ending with profit driven supplying at the expense of the quality.
