Opinion & Comment: Dairy Research
Posted by: agrilive on Jan 29, 2004 - 08:44 PM
Information
Dear Policy Experts and Dairy Specialists,

I thought it would be nice to take your point of view for a study we doing these days for Pakistan, India, Kenya and Ethopia. As you know dairy sector of Pakistan has showed a growth rate above 4% as comapre to the region India (3.5%). The focus of this study is what were the key dairy policies and Markets in East Africa and South Asia. We will appreciate if any one from this high profile group can give his expert opinion/answer about these key questions :

* Contrary to the rhetoric, is dairy development really just a simple function of increasing demand, regardless of policies and institutions?

* Why have Pakistan and India experienced similar growth, in spite of different policies and institutional interventions?

* How has the government-led introduction of farmer dairy cooperatives influenced dairy development trends?

* Have imports and related policies played any role in influencing dairy development?

* Is formal milk market development a requisite for dairy development?

* What do the results suggest for the livelihoods and welfare of smallholder dairy farmers compared to larger farmers?

* What do the results suggest for employment/livelihoods in formal and informal milk markets?

If you could suggest me some database where I could get data from 1960 till now about the key agriculture developments. (I consulted agriculture statistics but it coveres only from 1986 onward.) Does anyone have a clue?

We will acknowledge your support in the final report of FAO/ILRI study.
