The Pharmaceutical Journal, the official journal of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB), may not be at the top of all veterinary surgeons’ reading lists, but last week’s issue (dated March 13) deserves attention. The front cover features a picture of a dog, and the accompanying text exhorts readers to ‘Put veterinary pharmacy on your agenda’. Inside, a leading article explains that the issue is devoted to various aspects of veterinary pharmacy. It points out that up to 500,000 visits a day to UK pharmacies are made by people who own a companion animal but that, while many pharmacists might answer ad hoc inquiries about animal health, relatively few pharmacies have sections in their premises dedicated to pets. ‘Now is the time to rethink this strategy,’ it says, adding that there has never been a better time for pharmacists to engage in veterinary health care.
