 The obligation on veterinary surgeons in practice to make provision for 24-hour emergency cover continues to tax the profession. It is a service that is highly valued by the public, and one for which the profession is rightly respected. At the same time, there is no doubt that, with changing demographics, the need to stick to working time regulations and greater specialisation among practices, meeting the requirement is becoming ever more difficult, to the extent that some have argued that the current situation is unsustainable. At the end of last year, the RCVS set up a working party to examine the current requirement and to see whether any changes were needed in the advice given in the Guide to Professional Conduct. The working party has indeed recommended changing the advice, and the RCVS is now seeking comments on its proposals from members of the profession and the public. The proposals have significant implications for the way in which 24-hour cover might be expected to be organised in the future and will clearly be of interest to all practising veterinary surgeons in the UK.
