DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT OF EAR DISEASES SEMINAR

The lecture is an informal presentation for the practicing veterinarian by Louis N. Gotthelf, DVM based on clinical cases. Numerous photos and examples of ear diseases are shown with an explanation of what can be done in the ear.

Lecture / Seminar
Applied Anatomy, and Physiology, and Histology of the ear canal, eardrum, and the middle ear. Pathogenesis of otitis external, diagnostics, cytology,
microbiology and treatment techniques. Pathogenesis of otitis media: including advanced diagnostics. Ototoxic chemicals, drugs and treatment of otitis media. Surgical options for end stage of ear disease.

Wet Lab
Laboratory will include a demonstration of how to use the MedRx Video
Vetscope, followed by hands on practical interactive laboratory with each
participant using this advanced video otoscopy system. Each participant will learn how to examine the ear canal and evaluate the tympanic membrane. Proper ear cleaning and flushing techniques will be demonstrated and then each group will properly clean and flush the ear canal using instruments and suction. In addition, each group will perform a myringotomy and retrieve cytological and microbiological samples from the bulla. Each participant will practice proper irrigation and medicating of the middle ear. This will also be the time for one on one discussion of diagnostic radiology, cytology and treatment techniques.

SMALL MAMMALS - BASIC TECHNIQUES

The objective of this lab is to provide hands-on experience for the veterinarians involved in the care and handling of small mammal species. This basic hands-on workshop will review a variety of handling, restraint, sample collection techniques, anesthesia and intubation, focusing on rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits. This is training for practitioners wanting to enhance their practice by adding small mammals or for those who need to update their skills with these species. Techniques will be demonstrated by faculty and performed by participants. The lab will be held at the University of British Columbia.

Registration Fee: $250 (Enrollment limited to 20 participants)
