Dr Ramdeo Ramchurn (Dev) was born in 1945 in Mauritius in a village environment of Dagoti?re, where he spent his childhood days attending the local school. He won the primary school national junior scholarship and was able to attend the prestigious Royal College in the town of Curepipe. After obtaining a Cambridge Higher School Certificate, he taught mathematics and sciences at Hindu Boys College during 1966,Balliol College and New Eton College during 1967 and Botany at St Andrews School in 1968.
He was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship and completed his first degree at Bombay Veterinary College in 1972. During his stay in India, he remained President of Mauritian Students’ Association and earned Certificates in Social Work and Horse Riding.
The professional career of Dr. Ramchurn started as a private practitioner in Mauritius from 1972 while working for Mauritius Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) where he served as Honorary Veterinary Surgeon until 2005. He joined the University of Mauritius as Lecturer of Animal Science in 1973.In 1976;he received an MSc in Animal Production at the University of Reading, UK under a British Council Programme. He became Senior lecturer in 1981.He remained Head of Section of Animal Production on several occasions for different periods. He became the Head of the Department of Agricultural Production and Systems in 1994. He mounted several courses in the fields of Animal Production, Health, Forestry, Agriculture, Agribusiness and Biotechnology.

He provided much effort to the nearby island of Rodrigues where he has been in several capacities. He had initiated the “antenne universitaire” in 1982 and ,then after, coordinated all courses offered by the University of Mauritius and pertinent to Rodrigues in the field of agriculture and forestry. He has also taught most students presently employed at the “Agricultural Services” of the island and supervised several projects.

Dr Ramchurn obtained an MPhil in Agriculture in 1999 and later a PhD in Animal Sciences & Industry in 2004.

At the university, he had also been an active member of the Union of Academic Staff Association serving as its treasurer, secretary and finally as President in 1982. He had been a member of senate for over two decades and a member of the University Council on three occasions.

He has several experiences with projects financed by International organisations such as
International Foundation for Science (IFS) Sweden; UNDP- JEF/SGP Switzerland - Sarcelles Nature Park of Mauritius; Food & Agric Research Council Mauritius; SADC – Mauritius.
Also, his experience in developing countries took him to Tanzania, Zambia, Mali, Senegal,
Tunisia, South Africa, India, China and Philippines.

Furthermore, he has widely traveled in most African, SE Asian and European countries.
