Degree: Veteriner Hekim (VH) Recognition status: EAEVE Website: www.istanbul.edu.tr/english/socrates/faculty12.htm The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, which practices on the Avcilar Campus, has as its aim the planning and application of research based on international standards, modern science and technology, and the general health and animal husbandry policies of the country and the training of veterinary surgeons aware of these standards. The main function of the faculty is to protect human and animal health, to educate the people in issues like animal rights and ecology, to develop new scientific techniques in the profession, and to create policies of modern animal husbandry. Importance is also given to working towards the cooperation between the university and the industry. Academic research congresses for students are also organized. An agreement of academic cooperation is still in operation between the faculty and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Ludwig Maximillian University, Munich in Germany. The faculty has also approached the EAEVE (European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education) evaluation programme and work is currently continuing for commendation. The duration of studies is 10 terms (five years). This is lengthened for a further year if the students choose to follow a one-year voluntary preparatory course in English during their first year. The faculty consists of three departments: The Department of Fundamental Sciences for Veterinary Surgery, the Department of Diseases and Clinical Studies in Veterinary Surgery, and the Department of Zootechnology and Animal Nourishment for Veterinary Studies. Students have to successfully complete courses from these three departments in order to graduate. The Department of Fundamental Sciences for Veterinary Surgery offers basic biology and classical knowledge to prepare students in their field. The Department of Diseases and Clinical Studies in Veterinary Surgery offers courses on the concept of diseases, reasons and effects of diseases, various methods used for treatment, preventive medicine, the production of animal products, their monitoring, and public and environmental health. The Department of Zootechnology and Animal Nourishment for Veterinary Studies offers courses in the genetic characters of animals, the production of new and fertile species and their amelioration, the characteristics of species and animal foods, food analyses and diseases resulting from nourishment problems.
