Scientists in this specialized field will explore what is known about these viruses through virologic studies, surveillance data, epidemiology, prevention, control, ecology, and policy. This is a unique opportunity, as past international meetings have not taken such an interdisciplinary view of this area of study. With the emergence of the novel A(H1N1) influenza strain causing the current pandemic, the reasons to hold this meeting are clearer than ever before.
