WVA/WMA Global Conference on One Health – SMA/SVA joint press conference

Spanish Medical and Veterinary Associations organized a joint press conference to present the Global Conference on One Health to be held in Madrid on May 21st and 22nd 2015

On 10th March 2015, the President of Consejo General de Colegios de Médicos de España (Spanish Medical Association) Dr Rodriguez Sendín, and the President of Consejo General de Colegios Veterinarios de España (Spanish Veterinary Association), Dr Badiola, presented the outlines and purposes of the Global  Conference initiated by the World Medical Association (WMA) and the World Veterinary Association (WVA), that is the first of its kind that brings together medical and veterinary global associations to collaborate on One Health Concept

Dr Rodríguez Sendín and Dr Badiola highlighted the importance of working together from the scientific evidence that health of humans, animals and environment go hand in hand, sharing risks and benefits. They expressed the need to collaborate when addressing zoonotic diseases (diseases transmitted from animals to humans), antimicrobial resistance, management of natural disasters, production healthy food and environmental hazards to human and animals.

For Dr. Badiola this conference represents for both professions, historically linked, an opportunity to work in the health scenario, which "cannot be fragmented in a globalized world." As an example he recalled recent epidemics and pandemics such as avian influenza or Ebola, the latter caused by a virus of animal origin "that it has not been well studied yet" and that is a case that he considered a warning our current society.
