The Uganda Veterinary Association (UVA) is the winner of the 2019 World Veterinary Day Award, which is organized annually by the World Veterinary Association in partnership with HealthforAnimals. The award and monetary prize presentation took place during the 3-day Symposium and Annual General Meeting of UVA at The Golf Course Hotel, Kampala. UVA made history by becoming the first Association to win the global competition two times in a row, after winning the 2018 edition.

The impressive ceremony had a lot of fanfare and was attended by Ugandan senior government officials, including Hon. Kibanzanga Christopher, Minister of State for Agriculture and General Elly Tumwine (Rtd), who is the Minister of Security. There were several veterinarians who travelled across the East Africa sub-region to network with their colleagues in Uganda. WVA was represented by Dr. Gani Enahoro, who is the Chairman, WVA Policy Committee and WVA Councilor for Africa. In his speech, he commended the UVA leadership and the strong support from the government and people of the Republic of Uganda. He encouraged them to win a hat-trick in 2020 and set a record that would be difficult to rival.

The Hon. Minister of Agriculture eagerly received the trophy on behalf of UVA while the enthusiastic crowd applauded. In their speeches, the two ministers congratulated UVA and spoke glowingly about the veterinary profession and its practitioners. They thanked WVA and HealthforAnimals for the transparency in the process that resulted in the back-to-back victory of UVA in the face fierce competition from most of the other ninety-seven international members of the World Veterinary Association, the voice of the veterinary profession.
