WVA SUPPORTS WORLD ANTIBIOTIC AWARENESS WEEK

Across the world, veterinarians are united in the fight against Antimicrobial Resistance

As an integral component of the One Health triad, veterinary professionals understand well that environmental, human, and animal health are inextricably linked. Growing public health threats at the human-animal-ecosystem interface – with AMR being amongst the most pressing – warrant multi-sectoral responses inclusive of all major relevant parties. The veterinary profession, through its key function in applying judicious use principles and ensuring appropriate handling of pharmaceuticals and medical waste plays a crucial role in the global efforts to promote antimicrobial stewardship to safeguard the public, animal, and environmental health.

One Health, antimicrobial stewardship, and tackling antimicrobial resistance are key priorities of the WVA’s Strategy. The WVA demonstrates its commitment through the development of policies such as the WVA Policy on the Responsible use of Antimicrobials, and through partnership and collaborations with global health organizations, such as the WHO, OIE, FAO, WMA and many others.

The WVA is exceptionally proud to announce that the WVA nominee, Prof. Scott Weese, was recently selected to serve as a member of the One Health Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance. In this capacity, Dr Weese will be providing advocacy and advisory functions on behalf of the global veterinary community to ensure that action is taken to promote global antimicrobial stewardship and address threats related to antimicrobial resistance.

This week, the WVA invites the global veterinary community to join in this inaugural week-long event and to take advantage of it as a platform to educate their governments, communities, and clients to ensure that appropriate actions are taken to address antimicrobial resistance worldwide.

Handle with care, reflects the overarching message that antibiotics are a precious resource. Overuse and misuse of antimicrobials must be avoided.
