‘Animal Health 2003: the report of the Chief Veterinary Officer’ was published by DEFRA last week and, like previous annual reports from the CVO, contains a wealth of information relating to animal health and disease control in Great Britain up to the end of the year.
Much of last year was taken up by DEFRA’s plans to develop a new animal health and welfare strategy and, in addition, it also contains a section discussing DEFRA’s ‘more strategic approach’. DEFRA was expected to publish its animal health and welfare strategy on June 24, the day after this issue of The Veterinary Record went to press, so there should be more on that in next week’s issue. In the meantime, the CVO’s annual report gives a useful summary of the thinking behind the strategy as well as indicating where it is heading.
