‘Evidence and innovation: DEFRA’s needs from the sciences over the next 10 years’ is the latest strategy document to find its way out of DEFRA and, as the title suggests, attempts to anticipate the department’s scientific requirements over the next decade. As such, it will be of interest to researchers although, in taking ‘a forward look’, it applies a fairly broad brush to anticipating requirements and so is unlikely to give them much information on whether their current pet project is likely to be funded. More generally, the document is of interest in terms of what it reveals about how animal health and welfare sits in DEFRA’s scheme of things, and how it sees agriculture developing in the future.
