AVMA Global Food Security Summit

A key deadline is fast approaching for anyone interested in attending the AVMA’s global food security summit next month: You need to book your hotel by January 20 to ensure you have a reservation and can take advantage of the special lodging rate.

The three-day summit, Food Security—Understanding the Role of Animal Health & Well-Being, takes place February 9-11 in Washington, DC. We have secured a block of rooms for summit attendees at a discounted rate at the summit venue, the Grand Hyatt, but those rooms will only remain available through next Wednesday, January 20. After that date, all bookings will be subject to general hotel availability, and the special room rate available to summit attendees will not apply.

Food Security—Understanding the Role of Animal Health & Well-Being is designed to introduce and explore constructive public and private stakeholder partnerships between national and international relief and development organizations and the veterinary community in order to promote and enhance global food security. The summit organizing committee, which comprises representatives of non-governmental organizations, funding agencies and AVMA member veterinarians, has put together an exciting audience-interactive program with internationally renowned speakers. Veterinarians attending the full summit will be eligible to receive 14 hours of continuing education (CE) credit.

This will be a facilitated, interactive meeting, with input from the audience adding to information shared by presenters, all resulting in a report and action plan for those organizations attending. There will also be time set aside for networking. Those working or interested in enhancing food security at the national and international levels are encouraged to attend. This includes, among others:

  • Representatives of non-governmental, governmental and intergovernmental organizations
  • Veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals
  • Representatives of organizations and industries that produce animal source foods for human consumption
  • Educational providers—particularly those focusing on skills and competencies related to food security
  • Practitioners and researchers (e.g., nutritionists, ecologists, phytosanitarists, infectious disease specialists) focusing on the value of animal source foods and/or enhancing food security.
