170 years of Veterinary Education in the American Continent

In 2023, Mexico’s leading institutions related to the veterinary profession join forces to celebrate the 170th anniversary of this historic event. The organizing committee has created an interesting scientific, cultural and social program. To address some current issues relevant to the veterinary profession, the Organizing Committee has arranged a series of conferences. Renowned speakers will present talks on how society perceives the profession, professional identity, standards of practice, and trends in veterinary education, as well as on animal welfare, professional welfare, zoonosis etc.

The Organizing Committee expects a memorable celebration and looks forward to welcoming anyone willing to join this celebration in Mexico.

On August 17, 1853, the President of the Republic of Mexico, Antonio López de Santa Anna, signed the decree establishing a veterinary school with a four-year program in Mexico City.

This is how the education of veterinary medicine in Mexico and, in reality, throughout the American continent began in the historic building known as the “Antigua Escuela de Medicina Veterinaria San Jacinto”, which is the antecedent of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM.

Currently, the historic building where the first veterinary school was established hosts the Mexican Federation of Colleges and Associations of Doctors in Veterinarian Medicine of Mexico (FedMVZ), the Mexican Association of Schools and Faculties of Veterinary Medicine (AMEFMVZ), the National Technical Advisory Council for Animal Health (CONASA), the National Council for Education in Veterinary Medicine (CONEVET), the National Council for Certification in Medicine Veterinary (CONCERVET) and the Mexican Veterinary Academy (AVM) among other organisms that guarantee the good standing of the veterinary profession in Mexico.
