The World Veterinary Association (WVA) is proud to celebrate the recognition of the Essential Veterinary Medicines List (EVML) for Food-Producing Animals, which has received the inaugural Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Collaboration Award. The EVML was co-created by the World Veterinary Association (WVA) and Brooke to improve access to essential veterinary medicines worldwide.

The global Essential Veterinary Medicine List (EVML) has received the Inaugural Collaboration Award presented by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), an observer member of the World Veterinary Association (WVA), in recognition of its contribution to improving worldwide access to essential veterinary medicines.

The World Veterinary Association (WVA), in collaboration with The Brooke, hosted a do-it-yourself interactive workshop on the Essential Veterinary Medicines List (EVML) during the 41st World Veterinary Association Congress (WVAC 2026), introducing participants to the practical application of the EVML as a blueprint for developing country-specific essential veterinary medicines lists. Attended by 31 delegates, the workshop highlighted how the EVML can help countries prioritise medicines according to their own animal health needs, production systems and regulatory contexts, while promoting responsible medicine stewardship. The workshop also featured a case study on Ethiopia's Essential Veterinary Medicines List, illustrating how the framework can be adapted in practice.

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) recently held an interactive workshop entitled “EVML Do It Yourself”, at WVAC2026 in Tokyo, Japan, The Workshop was dedicated to the implementation of national Essential Veterinary Medicine Lists and their its role in strengthening veterinary medicines stewardship under the One Health approach.

The Essential Veterinary Medicine List (EVML) has been further strengthened by the inclusion of poultry associated essential veterinary medicines and by the integration of antimicrobial classification information by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

WVA and working animal charity Brooke have pledged commitment to continue work on the first global list of essential veterinary medicines. WVA and Brooke signed an agreement committing to efforts to support veterinarians and veterinary associations better access to affordable, effective medicines. The list includes over 300 medicines and vaccines for cows, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, horses and donkeys, highlighting which medicines are the most important in keeping animals healthy.

WVA and Brooke hosted a webinar to publicly present the Essential Veterinary Medicines List (EVML) for food producing animals on the 26th of March. The meeting was attended by 210 participants from all over the globe, among veterinarians, international animal health agencies, pharmaceutical industry and policy makers. This collaborative effort from WVA and Brooke Action for Working Horses and Donkeys means a significant advancement in animal health but most importantly in One Health.

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) and global animal welfare organisation Brooke have launched the first-ever global list of essential veterinary medicines for food producing animals. The list will help to improve access to safe and effective medicines and vaccines for veterinarians around the world and act as a valuable tool to help respond to the global threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and to support pandemic prevention preparedness plans under development.
