Kenyan Veterinarian Professor Susan W. Mbugua Named Winner of Veterinary Education Category in the WVA Global Veterinary Awards

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) and Ceva Santé Animale (Ceva) are pleased to announce the winner of the Veterinary Education category in the forthcoming WVA Global Veterinary Awards: Professor Susan W. Mbugua, a respected and trailblazing veterinary educator from Kenya.

Professor Mbugua, a retired Professor of Veterinary Surgery, has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to veterinary education over a distinguished career spanning decades. She earned her Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and PhD in Veterinary Clinical Studies from the University of Nairobi, and a Master of Science degree from Colorado State University. Throughout her career, she was known for her deep knowledge, approachable teaching style, and unique ability to demystify complex surgical topics for her students.

As a professor, Prof. Mbugua taught both undergraduate and postgraduate students across various areas of veterinary surgery, including ophthalmology, neurology, orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery, and diagnostic imaging, particularly radiology. These areas, often considered challenging by students, became more accessible under her guidance thanks to her clarity, passion, and dedication to nurturing confidence and competence among future veterinarians.

Beyond the classroom, Prof. Mbugua has made lasting contributions to the veterinary profession in Kenya. She was the Founding Chairperson of the Kenya Small and Companion Animal Veterinary Association and served as Panelist and Chairperson of the Kenya Veterinary Board – East African Hip Dysplasia Scheme, further highlighting her leadership in professional development and clinical standards.

Professor Mbugua’s award is the second category winner to be announced ahead of the WVA Global Veterinary Awards Ceremony, which will take place on 19th of July 2025 during the World Veterinary Association Congress (WVAC) in Washington DC, US.

Dr. John de Jong, President of the World Veterinary Association, stated:
“Professor Susan Mbugua’s contribution to veterinary education in Kenya and beyond is truly remarkable. Her commitment to academic excellence and to nurturing future generations of veterinarians exemplifies the values we hold dear at the WVA. We are honoured to recognize her with this well-deserved global distinction.”

One outstanding recipient will be named Veterinarian of the Year during the ceremony in Washington DC.
