One Health champion Dr Simon Doherty is the “Veterinarian of the Year 2024” of the WVA Global Veterinary Awards

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) and Ceva Santé Animale (Ceva) are pleased to announce the winner of Veterinary of the Year 2024 of the WVA Global Veterinary Awards, as Dr. Simon Doherty, based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The WVA Global Veterinary Awards are an evolution from the previous WVA Animal Welfare Awards, which were extended to include all 4 WVA’s areas of work – Animal Welfare, One Health, Medicine Stewardship and Veterinary Education – and to also recognise the Vet student of the year. Having won the prize for One Health, each of the WVA Working Groups Chairpersons voted for an overall winner, with Dr. Simon Doherty coming out as the winner. The announcement was made on stage at a glittering ceremony as part as part of the 39th World Veterinary Association Congress in Cape Town, South Africa.

WVA’s Factsheet on Donkey Skin Trade and Welfare of Donkeys now updates

Demand for ejiao is increasing, leading to global trade and poaching of donkeys. Almost 6 million skins currently being harvested annually to be used to produce collagen for a  traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), called eijiao. The rampant killing of donkeys for the skin trade leads to the impoverishment of local communities, loss of opportunities for women, and impairs access to education for children, water provision and agricultural sustainability. The global donkey population stands at~53.4million. The donkey population in China alone has decreased from ~11 million in 1992 to just under 2 million in 2020 (FAOSTAT, 2021).

Malaysian veterinarian, Professor Dato’ Dr Azmi Lila is the winner of Veterinary Education category of the 2024 World Veterinary Association Global Veterinary Awards

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) and Ceva Santé Animale (Ceva) are pleased to announce the winner of the Veterinary Education category in the forthcoming WVA Global Veterinary Awards, as Professor Dato’ Dr. Azmi Lilabased in Malaysia. Professor Azmi holds a diverse range of qualifications, including a PhD in Virology/Microbiology from the University of Cambridge, an MBA, and an LL.M in Business Law. He is former President of the Asian Association for Veterinary Schools (AAVS), former Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, former Deputy Vice Chancellor at Universiti Putra Malaysia, and has held various council memberships with various regulatory boards in Malaysia and organisations abroad.

World Veterinary Day 2023 Award Ceremony in Kathmandu, Nepal

The World Veterinary Day 2023 Award ceremony was held on the 23rd of March in Kathmandu, Nepal. This time, the award went to the Nepal Veterinary Association for its contribution to promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness in the Veterinary Profession. The president of the WVA, Dr Rafael Laguens, handed over to the president of the NVA, Dr Ram Krishna Khatiwada, the check for 5000 dollars of the prize, with the presence, as a guest of honour, of the Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Ms Jwala Kumari Sah, and Dr Serene Amatya, Vice coordinator of Right to Protein run, and NVA member.

New WVA Position Statements on Veterinary Para-Professionals

The WVA Working Group for Veterinary Education just published one Position Statements on Veterinary Para-Professionals. With it, WVA recognises the critical role played by Veterinary Para-Professionals (VPPs) in supporting the performance of veterinary veterinary services (PVS) and the need for regulation under Veterinary Statutory Bodies (VSBs) or equivalent Veterinary Professional Authority (VPA) to perform their designated tasks. WVA also recognises that in some remote and rural areas where there may be a shortage of veterinary professionals certain primary animal healthcare services may be provided by veterinary para-professionals (VPPs).

WVA and Brooke’s hosted a webinar to present the Essential Veterinary Medicines List (EVML)

WVA and Brooke hosted a webinar to publicly present the Essential Veterinary Medicines List (EVML) for food producing animals on the 26th of March. The meeting was attended by 210 participants from all over the globe, among veterinarians, international animal health agencies, pharmaceutical industry and policy makers. This collaborative effort from WVA and Brooke Action for Working Horses and Donkeys means a significant advancement in animal health but most importantly in One Health.

World Veterinary Association and Brooke launch world’s first Essential Veterinary Medicines List (EVML) for Food Producing Animals

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) and global animal welfare organisation Brooke have launched the first-ever global list of essential veterinary medicines for food producing animals. The list will help to improve access to safe and effective medicines and vaccines for veterinarians around the world and act as a valuable tool to help respond to the global threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and to support pandemic prevention preparedness plans under development.
