As the global veterinary community prepares for the 40th World Veterinary Association Congress (WVAC2025), hosted by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Convention in Washington, DC, in July 2025, other three landmark events promise to set the tone for veterinary excellence worldwide.
All veterinarians and veterinary para-professionals should be subject to the authority of a Veterinary Statutory Body or equivalent Veterinary Professional Authority (VPA), legally established within the jurisdiction where they practice or support veterinary medicine. We also recognise that the responsibilities of a VSB or VPA may be shared among different entities. Some may manage registration and licensing processes, while others may focus on establishing ethical standards and representing the profession in consultation with governments and other stakeholders.
WVA has released two new position statements reinforcing its commitment to responsible veterinary medicines stewardship, particularly in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Together, these two position statements provide a clear framework for improving access to veterinary medicines and enhancing regulatory systems in regions where veterinary public health remains a critical development priority.

After more than two years of intense negotiations, the pandemic agreement has reached a critical milestone. On April 10, during the final round of talks, Articles 4 and 5—focused on prevention and One Health—were officially agreed (“greened”), marking a historic achievement in global health governance. For the first time, the One Health approach has been included in a legally binding international instrument. These articles establish a comprehensive framework to prevent pandemics at their source, before humans and animals suffer, and before localized outbreaks become global crises.

WVA is pleased to announce that the theme for World Veterinary Day 2025 will be “Animal Health Takes a Team” . This theme highlights the collaborative nature of veterinary practice and underscores the essential role that multiple professionals play in delivering high-quality veterinary services.

On March 26th and 27th, 2025, the World Veterinary Association (WVA), in partnership with the Africa Veterinary Technicians Association (AVTA), hosted a successful workshop in Uganda. The event brought together key stakeholders from the veterinary and veterinary paraprofessional (VPP) communities, including representatives from the Uganda Veterinary Association (UVA), the United Veterinary Paraprofessional Association (UVPPA), the Uganda Veterinary Board, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF), the Chief Veterinary Officer, FAO, and Dr James Ouma, WVA Councillor for Africa. The primary objective was to strengthen collaboration between the veterinary and VPP associations, and highlight the crucial role of VPPs globally.

The Fukuoka One Health International Forum was a great success, with approximately 250 participants in attendance, in Fukuoka, Japan in 22nd of February 2025. The Forum welcomed Dr John de Jong Dr Mark Schipp and Dr Maria Minerva P. Calimag.
