WVA Council Meets in Geneva: positive momentum, new Members, and reflection on legacy

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) held its latest Council meeting on 10th and 11th December in Geneva, Switzerland, with the majority of Councillors in attendance. The in-person gathering proved to be both productive and energising, marked by constructive debate, key decisions, and valuable opportunities for collaboration.

Under the Chairmanship of WVA President Dr John de Jong, the meeting focused on advancing ongoing initiatives and reviewing organisational priorities for the year ahead. The Council received a warm welcome from Dr Roberto Mossi, President of the Swiss Veterinary Association, who shared insights into the Association’s strategy, operations, and future plans—highlighting opportunities for cooperation and knowledge exchange.

Strengthening governance and membership

The Council reviewed significant progress in governance development. WVA staff have worked intensively to prepare comprehensive Terms of Reference for both internal teams and organisational leadership—an important step in strengthening institutional accountability and ensuring continuity as the new Council prepares to convene following the April Congress.

Membership growth remains a positive trend. The WVA recently welcomed Chile as a new member, with Finland and Italy expected to join the Association soon—further broadening representation and global reach.

Partnerships and programmes

The WVA continues to cultivate and strengthen key partnerships. Council updates highlighted active collaboration with the Quadripartite and the formation of new strategic corporate partnerships that will support upcoming programmes and activities.Working Groups were recognised for their dedication throughout 2026 (and ongoing), contributing essential time and expertise to core WVA initiatives—from developing position statements and managing scholarship programmes, to supporting the Essential Veterinary Medicines List work and shaping the programme for the World Veterinary Association Congress.

Beyond formal sessions, councillors enjoyed a short social programme, including a behind-the-scenes visit to the CHI Geneva Concours Hippique International de Genève. These informal exchanges offered valuable space to connect, share perspectives, and reinforce collaboration.

The WVA extends its appreciation to the Geneva Convention Bureau and Palexpo for their support, which contributed greatly to the success of the Council meeting.
