Turkey has been called “the cradle of civilization” and one can discover what this literally means only by traveling in this land of history. The world’s first town, a neolithic city at Çatalhöyük, dates back to 6500 BC. From the days of Çatalhöyük up to the present time Turkey boasts of a rich culture that through the centuries has left a lasting foot-print on modern civilization.
Professionally veterinarians in Turkey are organized as the provincial chambers and the chambers are assembled under a central body namely Turkish Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA). The association is administered by a central council. The head quarter of TWMA is in Ankara.
Presently there are around 20.000 veterinarians in Turkey.
Turkey gained candidate country status to EU in 2004. Therefore, since that time all law and regulations concerning Veterinary and Food Safety sector have been harmonized with EU acqui.
The main legal acts governing Veterinary and Food Safety sector are Animal Health Control Law no. 3285, Food Law no.5179, Fishery Law no. 1380.
Presently there are 8 veterinary control and research institutes and 39 provincial food control laboratories under the MARA authority.
