The World Veterinary Association (WVA) and the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH, formerly OIE) are conducting a survey to update the WVA/WOAH Global Repository of Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Antimicrobials in Animal Health. This repository, first established in 2018, serves as a critical resource for identifying best practices and supporting global efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Antimicrobial resistance is a growing global threat, impacting human, animal, and environmental health. Effective strategies for the responsible use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine are essential to slowing the development and spread of resistance. To this end, the repository collects guidelines from across the world, providing a comprehensive overview of current practices and enabling stakeholders to share knowledge and resources.
As part of our commitment to maintaining this resource’s relevance and utility, we are now updating the repository. The current survey seeks to gather new and revised guidelines, ensuring the repository reflects the most current and effective practices in antimicrobial stewardship.
Purpose of the Survey
The purpose of this survey is to gather updated information on existing guidelines that promote the responsible use of antimicrobials in animal health. By collecting this data, the WVA and WOAH aim to:
- Update the Repository: Ensure that the global repository reflects the most current guidelines and best practices.
- Identify Best Practices: Highlight effective strategies that can be adopted or adapted in other regions.
- Fill Gaps: Recognize areas where guidelines are lacking and encourage the Criteria for inclusion
Criteria for inclusion
Submissions should adhere to the following inclusion criteria:
- Scope of Guidelines:
Therapeutic Guidelines: Guidelines must address the therapeutic use of antimicrobials in animal health. This includes practices related to the treatment, control, and prevention of diseases.
The repository will not include: National Action Plans (NAPs) and legislative resources. Additionally, while the repository currently focuses on therapeutic guidelines, it does not include guidelines on prevention, vaccination, or other types of antimicrobials such as antiparasitics and antivirals. Future updates may consider expanding the scope to include these areas based on feedback and evolving needs. - Relevance and Applicability:
Regional Relevance: Guidelines should be applicable to specific regions, considering local practices, resistance patterns, and veterinary needs.
Scientific Basis: Guidelines should be based on the latest scientific evidence and best practices. - Document Quality:
Clarity and Detail: Submitted guidelines should be well-documented, clearly written, and detailed enough to be practical for implementation.
Deadline: Please submit your responses by the 7th March
We invite all relevant stakeholders, including veterinary organizations, regulatory bodies, and academic institutions, to participate in this survey. Your contributions are essential for ensuring that the repository provides a comprehensive and up-to-date resource for the global veterinary community.
